Gerard White, RGN RNT RANP RNP BNS Dip Mgmt HDN PGDNE MSc FFNMRCSI.
Gerard has worked in Emergency Nursing for the last 15 years in a number of roles including Staff Nurse, Charge Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Advanced Nurse Practitioner. He holds a Bachelors degree in Nursing and specialist qualifications in management, education and emergency nursing. He was awarded a Clinical Research Training Fellowship in Nursing by the Health Research Board to complete a Masters degree in Nursing by Research, and a PhD Research Fellowship from NUI Galway. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FFNMRCSI).
Gerard is currently completing his PhD investigating Moral Distress among Emergency Nurses. His areas of interest include clinical teaching, trauma management, emergency department overcrowding and ethics in nursing.
Patrick Cotter is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in the Emergency Department at Cork University Hospital and an Adjunct Senior Lecturer and programme lead of the Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Nursing at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Cork. He was central to the development of the first advanced nursing practice post in the region and he has just completed his PhD.
Valerie Small is a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner (Emergency) working at St James’s Hospital. She pioneered the first role and post of Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Ireland. She is the ANP advisor to the National Emergency Medicine Programme. She is also a member of the PHECC and chairs their Education and Standards Committee. She is an associate lecturer on the Post Graduate Diploma/MSc in Advanced Nursing Practice (Emergency Nursing).
David Hennelly is the Clinical Development Manager for the National Ambulance Service. He is known to his friends and colleagues as 'Action Man' and is a force of nature IN and OUT of work. He is involved in multiple initiatives across the service including Clinical Governance of the Emergency Aeromedical Service, improving outcomes in Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest/STEMI and improving standards in Trauma Management.
Mr Hakon Skogrand was originally a soldier/medic in the Norwegian Navy and has worked as a paramedic in the ambulance service in Bergen, Norway and is currently a medical student in Bergen.
Kieran Henry is an Advanced Paramedic with the National Ambulance Service working in Cork and with the HSE/Air Corps Helicopter EMS based in Athlone. He is the inspiration behind the EMS Gathering, a very successful Learning with Leisure initiative designed to break down barriers between those delivering emergency care. He has been Cork's most eligible bachelor since 1988 with a smile that mothers love.

Dr Abel Wakai is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. He completed an EMS fellowship in Toronto, Canada, in 2008. His main research interests are evidence-based emergency medicine and health services research. He is a member of the Clinical Effectiveness Committee of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and is Chair of the Guideline Development Committee for the Irish Association for Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Brian Burns is a Consultant Emergency Physician, Prehospital and retrieval specialist, Director of Research with Sydney HEMS Trauma Director Orange Health Service, NSW, A/Professor of Emergency Medicine, Sydney University.
Dr Brian O’Riordan is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Cork University Hospital having recently returned from fellowship training in Melbourne, Australia.
Dr Carol Blackburn is a Consultant Paediatric Emergency Medicine, Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin, and is a University College Cork graduate.
Dr. Conor Deasy, is the lead organiser of this conference. He is an enthusiastic Munster Rugby supporter and in his spare time is significant contributor to local, national and intenational clinical, strategic and academic projects. Some claim he can sing....
Dr Cliff Mann is President of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and council member of the Royal College of Physicians. He has represented Emergency Medicine on guidelines and reports for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD). He was named in the Top 10 HSJ Clinical Leaders in the UK 2015.
Dr Cathal O' Donnell.graduated from University College Cork. He completed his Emergency Medicine training in a number of Irish hospitals in Cork and Dublin, and subsequently completed a Clinical Fellowship in Emergency Medical Services at the University of Toronto in 2005. This involved working with both Toronto EMS and the Ontario Air Ambulance Base Hospital Programme. On completion of this, he returned to Ireland to take up a post as Consultant in Emergency Medicine at the then Mid-Western Regional Hospital Limerick.
Cathal became NAS Medical Director in 2011, initially on secondment from his hospital post; he moved permanenently to NAS in 2013.
Also in 2013, Cathal was appointed Adjunct Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Graduate Entry Medical School, University of Limerick.
Dr Daniel Costello is a Consultant Neurologist at Cork University Hospital and all-round great guy! He has been key to the collaborative development of pragmatic, patient-centered, lean pathways of care for patients admitted to the Emergency Short Stay ward at Cork University Hospital with neurological conditions.
Consultant in Emergency Medicine, St Vincent’s University Hospital, Clinical Lead in EMS, UCD Centre for EMS, Medical Director CFR Ireland and Motor Sport Rescue Services/MCI Medical Team, passing interest in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine, responds with Wicklow Rapid Response on behalf of NAS in his infinite spare time.
Dr Darren McLoughlin nearly became a cardiothoracic surgeon but (to our delight!) defected to train in Emergency Medicine. He has a special interest in resuscitative procedures including ED thoracotomy and ECMO. Research interests include aortic aneurysmal disease, acute thoracic pathologies and total quality management.
Dr Eoin Coughlan is currently a post-doctoral researcher in the ED at Cork University Hospital looking at the implementation of an ED specific post-triage longitudinal monitoring system. He holds an MSc and PhD from Trinity College Dublin, where his primary field of study was addiction treatment. He also has an MA in traditional Irish Music Performance; and has scored award-winning film soundtracks; featured alongside Pat Shortt as ‘Neddy Ryan’s young fella’ ; and has been described by INXS as an“inspired and a top class player”
Dr Eugene Cassidy is a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist and Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry, University College Cork & all round top guy! He has developed collaborative ED Short Stay Ward safe, pragmatic, lean patient-care pathways in the areas of deliberate self-harm and substance abuse.
Dr Gareth Davies is Medical Director of London's Air Ambulance and Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Pre-Hospital Care and Emergency Preparedness with Barts Health NHS Trust. He has developed standards in pre-hospital care including resuscitative thoracotomy and REBOA. Gareth has been the lead consultant at many of London's major incidents, including the July 2005 bombings.
Dr Gerard McCarthy is National Lead for the Emergency Medicine Programme, Director of Emergency Medicine at Cork University Hospital and Chair of the National Board for Ireland of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine. Socially, he will entertain you with his unique left-handed guitar virtuosity and song.
Dr Geraldine McMahon is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Senior Clinical Lecturer at St. James's Hospital in Dublin. She established the first Emergency Department Chest Pain Assessment Unit in Ireland. She has Cork blood, which explains everything!
Dr. Íomhar O' Sullivan is a consultant in emergency medicine in Cork. He has an interest in CDUs and plays with things techy / IT. He has helped devlop practical EM Clinical guidelines (EMed.ie) and hospital specific Antibiotic/Pharmacy app. (nchd.ie).
Col (ret) John McManus is Professor of Emergency Medicine and EMS Fellowship Director, Georgia Regents University, Augusta, Georgia. John retired from the military with a combined Federal service record of 24 years from the US Army as a Medical Corps Officer and decorated combat veteran. He served as the Chief Medical Officer of the last combat support hospital in Baghdad.
Dr. Jason van der Velde is a Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Retrieval Physician who manages the National 24 hour Emergency Telemedical Support Unit, MEDICO Cork. Based in the Emergency Department at Cork University Hospital, he has a Master’s Degree in Disaster Medicine and over 20 years experience providing Pre-Hospital Care in a number of systems around the world. He is the Medical Director of West Cork Rapid Response, personally responding to around 200 Emergency Calls a year on behalf of the NAS.For over a decade, he has helped deliver the Anaesthesia Trauma and Critical Care Course and is CoAuthor of the ATACC Manual. Jason was named Cork Person of the Month in June 2014.
Dr Mark Doyle is President of the Irish Association for Emergency Medicine and a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at University Hospital Waterford, where he has recently been appointed as Clinical Director. He has spearheaded improvements in standards in Pre-Hospital and Emergency care in Ireland through his work with PHECC, the Irish Heart Foundation, ICEMT, and the Royal College of Emergency Medicine.

Mr. Mark Wilson is a consultant neurosurgeon and PreHospital Care Specialist working at both Imperial College (mainly St Mary’s Major Trauma Centre) and on London’s Air Ambulance. His specialist areas are acute brain injury (mostly traumatic brain injury) and its very early management. He also specialises in IT and has developed the Good Sam App.
Dr Nandini Kandamany is a recently appointed Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at Temple St Children’s University Hospital, having worked in the Paediatric Emergency Department at Cork University Hospital from where she is sorely missed! She undertook PEM fellowship training at Leicester in the UK before returning to Ireland.
Natalie May is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine with Paediatric Emergency Medicine, currently working at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. She has interests in medical education (especially communication and non-clinical skills development) and is a regular contributor at the St Emlyns blog and podcast. She is also the creator of the PEMLit project, reviewing current literature in Paediatric EM, and is proud to be part of the SMACC organising committee. She is a firm believer in FOAM, loves karaoke and is addicted to tea and running.

Dr Padraig Cantillon-Murphy is currently Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at University College Cork and an Honorary Lecturer at the Institute of Global Health Innovation, Imperial College London. He is principal investigator at the Bioelectromagnetics research group at UCC which explores novel device development in surgery and endoscopy. His current research interests include magnets for surgery, electromagnetic navigation and surgical robotics.

Dr. Patrick Seigne is a consultant anaesthetist in Cork University Hospital. He qualified from Trinity College, Dublin in 1989. Completed Anaesthesia training both in Ireland and America followed by a Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine in The Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston in 1999. Have been a Consultant in Anaesthesia/Intensive Care in Cork University Hospital since 2001. Recently returned from a sabbatical year in the Intensive Care Unit in Christchurch, New Zealand. Have been involved with The Intensive Care Society of Ireland for many years and am an ex-President.
Dr Roisín McNamara is a Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at Temple Street Children’s University Hospital in Dublin having trained in PEM at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, Australia.
Dr Suzanne Timmons is a geriatrician and senior lecturer in the Centre for Gerontology and Rehabilitation in UCC. She works 50% clinically in the acute hospital setting and in rehabilitation. Her academic commitments include being programme coordinator for the MSc in Older Person Rehabilitation and supervision of MSc and doctoral students. She has a keen interest in postgraduate interdisciplinary education and research. Her research interests focus on neurodegenerative disease in older people.
Dr Tomás Breslin is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine working at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin. Tomá was a GP and worked in Ireland and Australia before returning to the hot zone to train in Emergency Medicine.

Professor Bob Jarman is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine in Newcastle and visiting professor at the Teeside University. He is Chair of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Subcommittee and a member of the Ultrasound Special Interest Group for the European Society of Emergency Medicine. He was lead author for the recent PoCUS Curriculum Guidance and is on the Council of the British Medical Ultrasound Society.
Professor Eilish McGovern is trained as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon and has worked in the Mayo Clinic and several hospitals in Dublin. She has a long track record in postgraduate training. She is a past member of the Intercollegiate Board for cardiothoracic surgery (UK and Ireland) and a former examiner. She chaired the Irish Postgraduate Medical and Dental Board from 2003-2007 and currently sits on the National Medical Education, Training and Research Committee. She was elected President of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, for a two year term, in June 2010
Professor James Greer is Head of the Graduate Studies Centre at the Tyndall National Institute at UCC. His current research focuses on atomic scale simulations for nanoelectronic transistors and interconnects, including molecular and nanowire simulations. He was recognised by Education Matters for contributions to 4th level education in Ireland, particularly for his role as national leader of nanoscience and nanoengineering graduate education programmes.
Professor John Browne is a health services researcher with a professional background in health outcome measurement and psychometrics. He is currently exploring the value of PROMs as a tool for engineering quality improvement in a variety of clinical areas including breast cancer surgery and joint replacement. He is also the Principal Investigator on the Health Research Board funded ‘SIREN’ programme (Study of the Implementation of Reconfiguration on Urgent and Emergency Care Networks). He has authored more than 100 publications including a co-authored textbook (with Professor Judith Green of LSHTM) and the 2003 NHS Head Injury Guidelines.
Professor John Ryan is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Associate Clinical Professor in Emergency Medicine at St. Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin. He is currenty Vice Dean for Advanced Specialty Training in Emergency Medicine in Ireland. He is a board member of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine in Ireland and has a particular interest in sports injuries. He runs a concussion clinic at St. Vincent's University Hospital and is active in research in this area. He works with Leinster Rugby and he is also team doctor to the Irish Schools rugby team.
Tom Quinn is a Professor of and Associate Dean for Health and Medical Strategy in and is working to create a new University Health and Medical Strategy, representing the University with the Department of Health (UK) and NHS on training and research. He was closely involved in establishing the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Academic Health Sciences Network. He also chaired the University’s Athena SWAN self-assessment team and led the University’s successful application.
Professor Keith Willett is National Director for Acute Episodes of Care (NHS England), past National Clinical Director for Trauma Care and Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery, University of Oxford. He was named in the Top 10 HSJ Clinical Leaders in UK 2015.
Professor Peter Cameron is the Immediate Past President of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine, Past President of the Australian College for Emergency Medicine and Past Chairman of Emergency Medicine in Qatar. Other appointments include Head of the Victorian State Trauma Registry and Associate Director of the National Trauma Research Institute of Australia. Peter is the author of Textbook of Adult Emergency Medicine, 4th Edition. Peter & his wife Janet are return visitors to Cork, having braved the infamously wet West Cork EMS cycle in 2010!

A key component of quality in patient care is reviewing and learning from clinical audit findings. In major trauma audit, reviews should be undertaken where a patient with a high probability of survival score (Ps) dies or where a patient with a low probability of survival survives. The process of review is key to improving quality of care. NOCA provides a standardised framework to hospitals to examine these cases however differences in expectation and approach are present across the hospitals that currently receive trauma. This case based workshop offers an opportunity to tease out issues and hear how different hospitals and agencies nationally and internationally approach this issue. The workshop will be facilitated by;
